Roundabout

Roundabout
"Phil Keaggy, legendary guitarist and songwriter, Grammy nominee and Dove Award winner, has done it AGAIN!

Phil adds a new twist to the art of guitar playing with his mastery of live electronic 'looping', which allows him to combine the sounds of multiple guitar parts, with only one acoustic guitar.

The result is ROUNDABOUT, the orchestration of one of his most astonishing instrumental recordings to date.

ROUNDABOUT has a strong, yet cool Indie vibe. These memorable and orchestral compositions combine both the artistic and technology that creates an experience of joy, wonder and amazement for the listener. From one of the world's, and Christian music's, most beloved master musicians, ROUNDABOUT, reflects the Creator.......... through His creation."

Without doubt, there is some interesting musical moments on Phil's latest CD, which compiles his live electronic looping from his sound checks. However, as a long time Keaggy fan, I must say this CD pales compared to Phil's other instrumental CDs. CDs like "Acoustic Sketches," and "Freehand," which follow along the same improv vibe, feature many more interesting and moving musical passages. I really hope that some of Phil's back catalog can get the royal reissue treatment ("A Christmas Gift," all of the "Backroom Trax" cassettes, "Sunday's Child," etc.) the way the "Uncle Duke" project did. That would be cause for celebration above projects such as this one. For now, this CD is a pleasant, if a bit self-indulgent, holdover until the long awaited vocal album comes out later this year.

PK self-indulgent? hardly. This Cd imo is every bit as good acoustic sketches if not better. to each his own i guess. i do agree back room trax is due for a reissue. also it's time for some time! all 3 versions live, from how the west was won and the other version from the best of a while back would be cool. Also why not an acoustic version with looping for his classic song "time". to me this song is PK's "freebird" and one of my all time favorite songs from anyone!

Let me start off by saying if your looking for something like Acoustic Sketches, just go ahead and put it out of your mind. It's a completely different league; and I don't mean like major league and minor league, I mean like National Football League and National Hockey League. They're not even the same sport. Having said that, I LOVE THIS ALBUM! It is hypnotic, twisted, fun, and abstract. It's not the kind of album you would have playing in the background while you pray, but it would probably work if you had it playing while sipping a mocha and reading The Screwtape Letters. Come to think of it, I think I wil try that tonight. I guess I'm partial to this album because I've always enjoyed more artistic sounds as opposed to just straightforward melody. This project showcases Phil's off the cuff creativity, and how he can develop some really intriguing music on the spot.
