Author: David (Randy) Williams Very well done. This was the first I've heard of Keaggy doing Spanish anything. Of course, he has added his own style to the genre. I keep coming back to this instrumental!

Author: Garrett Lewis "Lights Of Madrid" is one of Phil's most overlooked instrumentals. Even after listening to it multiple times, my appreciation for it has been greatly enhanced. Though my opinion is just one of many, I would say that just about every song on this disc is "very good." None, however, more so than the "Overture" for guitar and orchestra. This is a great song--one where the brilliance of Phil's fingerstyle technique is ever-so apparent. This nine-minute overture is what I've referred to as a "monumental achievement" for Phil in a past review, and radiates with joy.
"Lights Of Madrid" has a very classical feel to it, which is evident in two of the album's superior songs, "A Field Of Flowers" and "Canarios." "Canarios" is only a minute long, and even though Phil did not write the song, the world he paints here is a vast and beautiful one--a world that you as the listener will long to re-visit. "Picante" is another very good song that has a smooth, latin-jazz feel to it--a wonderful addition to this album (Phil's guitar intro for this song is excellent).
Finally, "Lights Of Madrid" has a slick, polished production that makes it well worth the purchase. Phil has said in the past that he had hoped that Word Artisan would make "Lights" a double-disc collection, due to the many more songs Phil had for this project. Shame on the powers that be for not doing that--didn't they know that you can't get too much of a great thing?

Author: Michael Bagby Lights of Madrid is at the top of Phil's list of greatest albums. From the opening chord, to the final orchestral finish, this ranks as one of the finest interpretations of the classical Spanish and Nuevo Flaminco styles. I listened to the "Maestro" Andres Segovia as a child, and Phil plays on the same level, yet with more emotion, and "mas simpatico" to the score.
My personal favorite track is "Corazon de Fuego" with its ever changing rhythms and tonal sounds. I have listened to it over an over again, and each time appreciating another level of Phil's mastery. Another favorite is "Caliente" which I have moved to the top of the album order of play on my ipod because of its high energy. It is like drinking a cup of Nicarguan coffee with a little salsa picante on top. The Overture is a masterful arrangement combining many guitar sounds with other "strings".
This is an incredible album! If you liked "Beyond Nature" , then add some latino flavor and get ready for an experience that is "excellente y sabroso".
